M6706: Learning from Data: Intro to Exploratory Data Analysis in Splash Fall 2018 (Dec. 01 - 02, 2018)
Modern tech companies make their fortune by dealing in data. Capturing, storing, and -- above all -- learning from data drives the modern economy. How do we learn from data? Long before running complicated algorithms, data scientists perform Exploratory Data Analysis (EDA) to begin the learning process. In this interactive, discussion-based course, we will analyze datasets together, and discover how to learn from data.

M5164: The Science Behind Weather Forecasts: Introduction to Numerical Methods in Splash Fall 2016 (Dec. 03 - 04, 2016)
Forecasts are made by solving the mathematical equations which represent the physical laws of the atmosphere. These predictions on made on a grid of points analogous to different geographical locations. We know that large numerical predictions like weather forecasts are done on powerful computers, or 'supercomputers', but what really goes on in these computations? In this class, you will learn about the underlying 'schemes' scientists use to solve these equations and how they are interpreted by a computer to solve equations that govern our world. Each individual in the class will act as grid point in the computation, performing the tasks of processor. You'll be sure to get a new found appreciation for modern computers!

E4073: What the heck is Engineering? in Splash Spring 2015 (Apr. 11 - 12, 2015)
"You're good at math and science - you should be an engineer!" That was about the extent of my career counseling when I was in high school. If you're in a similar position, then this class is for you! This will be a short, broad lecture on what engineers actually do, drawing on case studies from mechanical, electrical, and product design viewpoints.
