ESP Biography

Modeled after Stanford's English 9CE: Introduction to Creative Writing class, this class is intended for students who are interested in learning more about the creative writing process. We will explore the roles of word choice, syntax, form, imagery, emotions, and much much more in creating pieces of prose and poetry that are truly moving. The course will involve large group didactic sessions interspersed with small group and individual writing and creative expression exercises. So come prepared to read, discuss, and write!

Have a paper due about the symbolism of the "green light" in The Great Gatsby? Need help parsing out the fine details within the lines of Robert Frost's "The Road Not Taken"? No fear! We will start from the beginning and teach you how to read and analyze any piece of literary work that you may encounter in your high school English classes. From alliteration to onomatopoeia to synecdoche, we got you covered. We will spend the beginning of class discussing general terms and strategies on how to close read works of literature. Then, we will spend a good portion of class discussing two works of literature and allowing you to practice your skills. This class involves a lot of active participation in order to be effective, so please come ready to share your ideas! We will create an open, safe space for people to share their thoughts and expect you to do the same. Come ready to learn, explore, and have fun!

Have an interview fast approaching? Scared to tell your friend that you're upset? Too shy to approach that cute boy or girl in class? No fear! In this class, you will learn how to ace the relationship game. From professional interactions to friendships gone sour to romantic relationships, you will learn how to navigate the verbal wars and romantic tangles that often come from interacting with fellow members of the human species. I will primarily take my material from the book "How to win friends and influence people" written by Dale Carnegie (a great read, i highly recommend it!) as well as from my copious amounts of experience in college. This will be a very interactive class and sharing of personal experiences will be critical to getting the most out of it. You will also learn a LOT about my own personal stories, so don't feel shy to share your own as we will all get to know each other very well by the end. So please enroll if you are ready to engage! :)

Why are words so powerful? What can colors communicate? How do authors create tone? In this class, you will develop your skills in literary analysis of many genres of text, including Carpe Diem poetry, excerpts from short stories, and scripts from plays. We will also discuss your own interpretations of certain works of art, especially modern art found in our very own Cantor Arts Center at Stanford! Please come in with a desire to share your thoughts as participation will be key to this class.

Tired of people calling Latin a dead language? Eager to construct your own Latin sentences? Then this class is for you! Through step by step instructions, learn how to compose your own stories, poems, and songs in Latin. Perhaps even write a love letter to someone in Latin. Having a basic knowledge of Latin grammar and syntax will be helpful, so we can dive right into composition. This course will involve participation and individual focus.

This course will largely be lecture-based and focus on giving the students a solid introduction to Latin grammar and syntax. We will be focusing on learning noun declensions, verb types and conjugation, and syntax. People who are interested in learning Latin but have never been exposed to it before should sign up for this class. Be ready to nerd out!!!
