Brief Biographical Sketch:
Rachel Gardner is a sophomore at Stanford University where she studies computer science, Chinese and entrepreneurship. Rachel's first experience with entrepreneurship came at age 15, when she was the team lead and programmer for a wireless robotics controller called the Chap Remote. Rachel is lead inventor on US Patent #9043031 for the ChapR, and led the manufacturing, marketing, and shipment of over 150 units to FIRST Robotics teams around the world. Rachel then assigned her patent rights to Westlake High School, and created a non-profit organization, called Chap Research, to give other students the same opportunities. Also passionate about studying Mandarin, Rachel has been studying Chinese for 4 years now, including a 2 month exchange program through the National Security Language Initiative for Youth. She is continuing to take Chinese classes at Stanford and hopes to have the opportunity to eventually work or study abroad again. This course provides an accessible overview of some of the latest topics in computer science. Our lineup of teachers come from a variety of backgrounds and interests, and they will share their stories about what computer science looks like in college and industry. The class will be very much driven by participants, so come with questions!
H5250: Intro to Chinese Language and Culture in Splash Fall 2016 (Dec. 03 - 04, 2016)
Are you interested in learning more about Chinese language and culture? This class will teach you how to introduce yourself in Mandarin Chinese and use other interesting phrases. We'll go over what makes Chinese characters so interesting, how to pronounce them, and how to write in Chinese.
This class will also introduce students to some fun aspects of Chinese culture, including Chinese calligraphy painting and making dumplings. You'll also hear from our teachers about their first-hand experiences studying abroad in China. Chinese snacks will be provided!
