P3849: 3 "R"s = Greener Planet in Splash Fall 2014 (Nov. 08 - 09, 2014)
Science and technology have created many new products over the past few centuries. Although extremely useful to humans it has resulted in a huge increase in trash such as plastic that we find all over the land and the ocean. Nature, on the other hand, has a built-in recycling system, the food chain, which ensures that no trash is ever generated.
What can we learn from nature’s recycling machine to reduce the mountains of trash that humans create every day?
In this session, you will explore the 3 "R"s and find out how you can help make your planet greener.

The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald is an American classic of love, excess, longing, and murder -- and one of my all-time favorite books. This class will be a book-club style discussion format: please read the book before you come. You bring questions, I'll bring the snacks!
B3984: Pathogens vs human defense: Who won in Splash Fall 2014 (Nov. 08 - 09, 2014)
Our survival on planet depends on our ability to deal with evading pathogens which are everywhere. In this class participants will learn what different pathogens are and how they cross the defense barrier to cause disease. What are the defense mechanisms our body has and how we are defending the pathogens most of the time. It would also be interesting to discuss that in presence of such an active and efficient immune system, how pathogen cause disease.
L3233: Cooking potstickers & a brief intro to The Pale King in Splash! Fall 2013 (Nov. 02 - 03, 2013)
If you would like to learn how to make chicken-scallion potstickers, or if you would like to learn a bit about David Foster Wallace's unfinished work \emph{The Pale King}, this is the class for you! The literary portion will be suitable for vegetarians, but the food will not. We won't go into much depth in our study of TPK; my goal is simply to spark your interest and maybe even inspire you to read the whole book.
L2911: In a (Freezer) Jam in Splash! Spring 2013 (Apr. 13 - 14, 2013)
In this class, we will learn how to make freezer jam, the low-key sibling of traditional cooked jams and jellies. I will also give a brief introduction to canning techniques that require heat.
Food that will be used:
fruit (possibly strawberries, raspberries, or peaches)
white sugar
liquid pectin
lemon juice
P2952: Exploring the Nanoworld in Splash! Spring 2013 (Apr. 13 - 14, 2013)
Strange things happen when you make stuff really small--small, as in, not much bigger than atoms. Come and learn about nanoscience through a series of hands-on activities that will help reveal some of the weird and wonderful behavior of the nanoworld.

Come and make something delicious that may involve Nutella, bananas, butter, sugar, and other sweet treats.
L2575: Learn how to make crêpes in Splash! Fall 2012 (Nov. 03 - 04, 2012)
Come and learn how to make the delicious, thin pancakes known as crêpes. We'll mix up some batter, cook some crepes, and top them off with savory and sweet fillings.

Crêpes are delicious, thin pancakes that are often served with savory or sweet fillings. Come and learn how to make the basic crêpe recipe, as well as cheese, spinach, and dessert fillings. Recipes will be suitable for vegetarians who consume dairy and eggs.
P1884: Magnetism: beyond the fridge door in Splash! Fall 2011 (Oct. 29 - 30, 2011)
Ever wondered how your fridge magnets got their magnetism? Ever wanted to build your own electromagnet? Did you know that some materials can enter exotic states known as spin glasses, spin ices, and spin liquids? In this course we will explore the strange and wonderful world of magnetism, from classical physics to quantum, touching upon a collection of my favourite topics. For those of you who like to learn by doing, the class will include several hands-on activities.
