ESP Biography

In this course, we will explore how speakers at TED conferences craft effective oral presentations, and how these same communication skills can help students in high school, college, and beyond! By studying and discussing videos of top TED speakers, students will learn the habits of effective communication. Topics covered will include oral presentation skills, effective slide design, and content organization. We will also discuss common fears about public speaking and ways to overcome them. Students will then have an opportunity to practice these skills with an oral communication tutor from Stanford's Hume Center for Writing and Speaking.

Did you know that oxygen comprises only 21% of the air you breathe? Where did oxygen come from and how does it support life on earth? How are free radicals made from oxygen and why are they bad for you? In this course, we‘ll learn about the chemistry of oxygen and its role in biology. We’ll unleash the power of oxygen through explosive in-class demonstrations.

This course will review the history and science of major epidemics from the middle ages to the modern era. We will also explore the medical technologies that allowed for the eradication of some of history's deadliest illnesses and discuss the importance of vaccines for preventing future outbreak of disease.

What causes a healthy cell to become cancerous? This class explores what cancer is and how it develops. We will also simulate the experiments that scientists use to learn more about cancer and to develop new treatments to fight it.
